Benefit Assistance

Benefit Assistance Programs provide medical, financial and food assistance to the residents of Powhatan County. These programs span both the Adult Division and Families and Children Division.

Access to these programs is based on income and economic resources.
  1. TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) - Cash assistance for eligible low income families. Time limited by state and federal statute. Virginia has a two-year limit and Federal law places a five-year lifetime limit.
  2. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formally know as, Food Stamps) - Staff determines eligibility and amount of benefits. An Electronic Benefits Transfer card, similar to a debit card, is issued to recipients for the purchase of groceries only.
  3. Medicaid - Provides assistance for medical services for eligible families and individuals. The Department determines eligibility.
  4. State/Local Hospitalization - Helps pay hospital bills for individuals not eligible for Medicaid. Funding is limited and is usually exhausted within six months.
  5. FAMIS (Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan) - Provides medical coverage for children who are not covered under any other insurance, and are not eligible for Medicaid.
  6. General Relief - A limited state/local program. In Powhatan, assistance is provided only to unemployable clients who are not eligible for assistance under a federal program -or- those awaiting eligibility determination for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) by the Social Security Administration.
  7. Auxiliary Grants - Provide a supplement for individuals who need care in an adult care residence so they can pay the approved rate for the home.
