Emergency Rescue Services

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Powhatan County are provided by the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad (PVRS), supplemented by contract EMS providers paid by the County. These organizations provide 24 hour basic and advanced life support 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad
The Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad (PVRS) purchases supplies and equipment, in addition to providing training and certifications for members.

Costs & Funding
PVRS relies on donations to pay for these expenses and the maintenance of PVRS facilities which enhance the quality of services provided to Powhatan’s citizens and visitors. Like many localities across the state, Powhatan County charges for EMS basic and advanced life support transports. Medicare, Medicaid and the majority of private insurance providers cover the costs of ambulance transports.

Staffing & Vehicles
As the volume of calls has increased over the years, the County has needed to supplement our volunteers with contract providers available to respond to calls within the County weekdays from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Additionally, the County provides vehicles and equipment for the PVRS. To minimize the impact on the County and avoid the need to raise tax revenue, Powhatan County implemented charges for EMS transports on July 1, 2012.
