The County of Powhatan is currently recruiting for the position of Building Official for the Building Inspections Department to replace the current Building Official who will retire November 1st, 2018 after 22 years of service (10 in the position of Building Official).  Work involves the enforcement of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code; the management of the day to day operations of the department; providing excellent customer service; and the coordination of issues related to building construction with other County offices and State agencies.  The position supervises a staff of four, which includes a building plans reviewer, two building inspectors and a permit technician.  Candidates are required to have experience with inspections of commercial and residential properties, as well as plan review.

Requires Bachelor’s Degree in construction management, architecture, engineering or related field, supplemented by at least six to nine years of experience in construction trades, architecture, engineering, or field inspection and plan review, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  Extensive experience as a building inspector, construction manager, or building department manager is preferred.

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.  Requires certification or license within one year in the following: Certified Building Official (CBO) and Combination Residential Inspector.  Combination Commercial Inspector and Amusement Device Inspector preferred.  The building official shall have general knowledge of sound engineering practice in respect to the design and construction of structures, the basic principles of fire prevention, the accepted requirements for means of egress and installation of elevators and other service equipment necessary for the health, safety and general welfare of the occupants and the public.  Management experience is preferred.
